History

History plays an important part in the UNIQUE Curriculum at St Andrews and we value the rich local history that surrounds our school and the local area.

The UNIQUE Curriculum fosters an ambition to develop children's curiosity about life in the past where all children are taught to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments and present their thoughts logically.

Throughout the curriculum, knowledge is built on and developed from the history of Britain and the wider world, Ancient civilisations and how the lives of significant figures have shaped the world we live in. Knowledge Organisers for each topic can be found on class pages to support children's learning at home.

Children at St Andrews start their journey in Early Years by learning about events in their very recent past, exploring the people, cultures and events that make our community so special. From Y1—Y6, we then use the National Curriculum as a basis to continue to focus on Historically significant periods of time and figures always considering our local context of Maghull and Liverpool. Beginning in KS1, we have created bespoke medium-term planning, supplemented by use of Opening Worlds curriculum resources in KS2, to ensure that children will develop a growing knowledge of the history of Britain and the wider world, Ancient civilisations and how the lives of significant figures have shaped the world we live in. At each stage of study, knowledge of ‘events, people and changes’ are carefully considered, building systematically on a growing understanding of Historical knowledge exploring several key themes within a chronologically secure framework. Historical concepts to underpin our disciplinary focus are also considered (considering continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, difference and significant and historical significance) to ensure pupils ‘Think Like a Historian.
